A caesarean section, also known as a c-section or caesarean, is a way of delivering a baby through a surgical cut in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Sometimes, a caesarean section is necessary to ensure the safety of the mother and the baby, especially if there are complications during pregnancy or labour. There are two types of caesarean sections: planned and unplanned. A planned caesarean section is scheduled in advance, usually when there are medical reasons that make a vaginal birth risky. An unplanned caesarean section is done as an emergency, when there are problems that arise during labour that make a vaginal birth impossible or dangerous.A caesarean section is a major surgery that carries some risks and benefits. If you have no serious problems with your pregnancy or labour, a vaginal birth is usually the best option for you and your baby. However, the decision to have a caesarean section is ultimately yours. You have the right to be informed and involved in your care. You need to give your written consent before a caesarean section can be performed. If you are unable to do so, your partner or next of kin can give consent on your behalf.
