Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction is a way to stimulate ovulation in women who do not ovulate regularly or at all (anovulation). This is a common cause of infertility, affecting 25 to 30 percent of women who have trouble getting pregnant. Ovulation is when the ovary releases a mature egg that can be fertilized. It usually happens once every 28 days, but it can vary from 21 to 35 days. If the egg is not fertilized, it is shed along with the uterine lining. This is called menstruation. If ovulation is rare or unpredictable, it is harder to conceive. This is known as irregular or oligo ovulation. If ovulation never happens, it is called anovulation. These conditions affect the availability and timing of the egg. Ovulation induction aims to improve the chances of pregnancy by using medications or other methods to trigger or regulate ovulation. This can be combined with natural intercourse or assisted reproductive techniques like intrauterine insemination (IUI). Sometimes, ovulation problems are due to other factors that need to be treated first.
